The California DOT (Caltrans) released a memorandum on Monday, April 16 stating California Annual Permit holders can now legally display the weekly short term restrictions on an electronic device.
That means, any driver in the state operating under an Annual Transportation Permit can carry and display the Weekly Short-term Restrictions Update for Annual Permit Holders (Weekly Restrictions) in either printed or electronic form. Either version must be legible and contain no alterations.
Previously, the state of California required these restrictions to be printed each week as part of their legal CA Annual Permit. But now, drivers can display the electronic document to any commercial vehicle law enforcement on an acceptable electronic device, including a laptop, tablet or smartphone. The California Highway Patrol will provide requirements for acceptable electronic devices, according to Caltrans.
This marks a move in the direction of technology as drivers are utilizing those devices while on the road more and more, and moving away from paperwork, especially with the recent ELD Mandate enforcement, although this only applies to weekly restrictions. All other permit accompaniments must be printed and in the driver’s immediate possession.
