Both westbound lanes of Interstate 40 between mile marker 20 and mile marker 15 will close between the Tennessee state line and the U.S. 276 interchange in North Carolina so emergency concrete repairs can be made to the bridge.

The closure starts at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18 and is expected to continue for up to five days, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT), and takes place along an area of I-40 with a history of rapid deterioration resulting in potential road hazards.

Repairs to the deteriorating concrete will be made ahead of Winter, which a crew will remove and replace old concrete to the over 50-year-old bridge.

Traffic will detour to I-26 into Tennessee, adding an additional 45 mins to travel time. While state officials and project engineers say the closure can last up to five days, it is said the project is estimated to take 48 hours to five days. The only way to make the repairs are to close the interstate.

Drivers heading West should take I-40 Exit 53B (I-240 West) for five miles to Exit 4A (I-26 West) and follow that for 74 miles, crossing into Tennessee. Then drivers can take Exit 8A for I-81 South and continue 57 miles to re-access I-40 near Dandridge, Tennessee.

Prior to the work starting Monday, crews closed the outside lane of the bridge heading east toward Asheville from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. starting Friday to complete repairs in that lane.

A majority of states are now allowing drivers to carry and display oversize load permits electronically, instead of having to carry paper copies.

Carrying and displaying oversize/overweight load permits electronically will provide convenience for those drivers who use a smart phone, tablet or laptop to conduct business. 

Drivers are taking caution as those who rely on smart phones only to show electronic permits in states allowed must be within their data carriers service area. If out of the coverage area, the driver will be considered as having no permit. 

New states are being added all the time, please check this list frequently for updates. 

Below is the breakdown of where each state sits on electronic versus paper permits:

AL — Must have a paper permit

AK — Must be able to show permit regardless of service area, otherwise will be considered to have no permit

AZ — Signed paper copy only, no plans to change

AR — Electronic permits allowed on seven-inch screen or larger

CA — Electronic transportation permits (RCATZ/STARS2 only) and any required accompaniments are allowed on any electronic device, no minimum screen size

CO — Electronic permit allowed, no minimum screen size

CT — Electronic verification of permit is acceptable, no minimum screen size.  The driver must be able to produce the permit on an electronic devise to show enforcement if pulled over. 

DE — Must have paper permit, state does not allow electronic hand held devices at all per state law

FL — Electronic permits are allowed with no minimum screen size, although blanket permits must be a paper copy

GA — Allow for electronic display of single trip permits

HI – Must have paper permit

ID – Oversize & overweight permits can be displayed electronically. No minimum screen size. Temporary registrations/fuel permits must be hard copy. 

IL — Paper required if Police escort is required. No certain screen size or device required

IN — Paper required if Police escort is required. No certain screen size or device required

IA — Electronic permits are acceptable, no minimum screen size

KS — State law says paper permits only, however some highway patrol will accept electronic permits with permit number

KY — Electronic permits are acceptable, no minimum screen size

LA — Electronic permits are acceptable, no minimum screen size, permits must be legible 

ME — Must have paper permit

MD — Electronic permits acceptable on smart phone or tablet. No minimum screen size

DC — Electronic permits are acceptable, no minimum screen size

MA — Must have paper permit

MI — Power Unit Construction Equipment Extender permit ONLY, all other permits must be hard copy 

MN – Electronic permits are acceptable on laptops, tablets or smartphone device, no minimum screen size, must provide complete and legible copies of the permit and general provisions

MS — Electronic permits are acceptable, no minimum screen size

MO — Electronic permits are acceptable, no minimum screen size 

MT —  Electronic permits are acceptable, no minimum screen size

NE —  Electronic permits are acceptable, no minimum screen size

NV — Must have paper permit

NH — Electronic permits are acceptable if permit can be signed electronically 

NJ — Must have paper permit

NM — Electronic permits are acceptable, no minimum screen size

The Maryland Department of Transportation (DOT) is warning all about a closure on the Westbound Bay Bridge that will affect oversize load travel through the Spring of 2020.

Weather permitting, the rightmost lane (Lane 1) on Westbound Bay Bridge (US 50/301) will be closed starting Monday, September 30, 2019 as part of the deck rehabilitation project. Lane 1 will remain closed 24/7 until Spring of 2020.  During this time, nightly full Westbound Bay Bridge closure with two-way traffic on Eastbound Bay Bridge is in effect (weather permitting).

It is recommended that commercial vehicles should avoid crossing the Bay Bridge and stay on I-95.
